Sociolinguistic Variation in Mandarin-English Dual Immersion Programs

Summary

This is my dissertation research project. Last year, I conducted fieldwork in a dual immersion program (a school in which students spend half the day learning in each language) with first and second graders. Now I am analyzing the data I collected from that work. I hope to learn something about how children acquire knowledge of the social meaning of certain linguistic variables in English and Mandarin. I'm also looking at variation among the teachers, to see how their usage patterns relate to those of the students, and patterns of correction among both teachers and students.
